The “Tani no Hayashikomi Parade” will be held.

The “Tani no Hayashikomi Parade” is a traditional event that has been held in the Tani district of Kitadani Town, Katsuyama City, Fukui Prefecture since the middle of the Edo period. It is said to be a Shinto ritual to celebrate and give thanks for the safe return of the lord. It used to be held in February when there was heavy snowfall.

At the front of the procession is a person called the “yard sweeper,” dressed in thick winter attire consisting of a nightgown made from a thick quilt and deep boots, who performs a grand display of sweeping the path clean with a large broom. Following behind are various costumed figures, including the lord and local residents dressed as tengu (mythical creatures), who parade their way to Iryo Shrine. At the shrine, they perform the Sanbaso dance and other sacred dances.

The festival was discontinued in 1972 due to depopulation, but it was revived in 2001 as momentum for its revival grew. In addition, in order to increase the number of participants and spectators, it is now held during the Obon festival in August.

Please come and see this parade.
