2025年3月7日（金）上平交流センター（南砺市）にて「第5回白山ユネスコエコパーク・リレーシンポジウムin南砺」を開催しました。五箇山地域は、ユネスコエコパークと世界文化遺産「白川郷・五箇山の合掌造り集落」の両方に登録されている世界でも非常に稀有な地域です。
白山ユネスコエコパーク学術部会員で、富山大学の奥敬一教授に、五箇山地域における学生の取り組みや、森林率97％、標高700mの南砺市利賀地域の豊かな森と集落を舞台にした TOGA森の大学校 の取り組みについて、ご講演いただきました。自然を活用した山村ならではの暮らしを体験しながら学ぶ様子は、参加者が改めて地域の取り組みを知るきっかけとなりました。
ワークショップでは、五箇山和紙の里から石本泉氏を講師にお迎えし、伝統工芸品である五箇山和紙の製造工程や新たな活用方法についてご紹介いただきました。参加者は、五箇山和紙の端材から好みの模様を選び、バッジ、ヘアゴム、マグネットの製作を体験し、伝統工芸に触れる貴重な時間を過ごしました。
また、講演とワークショップの間のブレイクタイムには、白山きりまんじゃろ コーヒーと南砺市産の米粉を使用した地元のお菓子を楽しみながら、参加者同士が交流を深めました。
白山ユネスコエコパークを地域の皆さまに改めて知っていただき、ユネスコエコパーク活動に関わる人を増やすことを目的に、7市村を繋いで開催しています。

The 5th Relay Symposium in Nanto City
The 5th Mount Hakusan Biosphere Reserve Relay Symposium was held on March 7, 2025, at the Kamitaira Exchange Center, Nanto City. The Gokayama area of Nanto City is a unique area, registered as both the UNESCO World Heritage Site “The Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama”, and the UNESCO Mount Hakusan Biosphere Reserve (BR).
Professor Keiichi Oku of Toyama University, one of the BR’s academic committee members, gave a lecture on student activities in the Gokayama area, and the activities of the TOGA Forest College. The college is set in the rich forests and villages of the Toga area of Nanto City, which exists at an altitude of 700m, comprised 97% by forest. Students are able to learn about local efforts while experiencing the unique culture of the mountain villages that utilize nature.
During the workshop, Izumi Ishimoto from the Gokayama Washi Village introduced the manufacturing process of washi paper in Gokayama, including new ways to use it. Participants were able to choose their favorite patterned washi scraps, and make badges, hair ties, and magnets, in order to experience the traditional craft.
During the break, participants connected together over a cup of Hakusan Kilimanjaro Coffee and local sweets made from Nanto City rice flour.
The Relay Symposium connects the seven cities and villages* of the BR with the aim of getting local people to learn about the BR, and increase the number of people active in the area. The next symposium will be held in Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture. We look forward to seeing you there!
*The Mount Hakusan BR encompasses parts of four prefectures and the seven municipalities. They include Nanto City (Toyama Prefecture), Hakusan City (Ishikawa Prefecture), Ono City and Katsuyama City (Fukui Prefecture), and Takayama City, Gujo City, and Shirakawa Village (Gifu Prefecture).
