On October 11 and 18, students from the Environmental Science Department of Hida Takayama High School and children from Shokawa Elementary School participated in a tree planting activity for Japanese larch saplings in a forest within the Isshiki area of Shokawa, Takayama City. They were guided by staff from the Hida Takayama Forest Association.
This activity was carried out as part of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve initiative, which aims to promote harmony between nature and human society. It provided an opportunity to experience the cyclical forestry practice of “harvesting—planting—nurturing—harvesting,” closely tied to the forestry traditions of the Shokawa region.
Through planting larch saplings and envisioning the growth of future forests in Shokawa, participating students gained hands-on experience and developed a deeper sense of attachment and pride for their hometown, fostering a spirit of appreciation for the region.
